'Standing on the terrace over looking stunning Freshwater beach with a Sardinian spritz in hand, the sun going down, guests arriving dressed for a celebration... you could really feel the joyful buzz in the air, the setting was idyllic and the festive season had truly begun.'
It was almost a week ago but I am still in a bubble of festive happiness after our beautiful evening at Pilu at Freshwater, celebrating the beginning of Summer with an exquisite ‘Sardinian feast’ prepared for us by award winning chef Giovanni Pilu.
With great anticipation we all made our way into the restaurant where we were seated on communal tables to enjoy a magnificent shared style ‘Sardinian Feast’.
This gourmet journey included: fregola with calamari, preserved lemon and parsley, herb baked sheep’s milk ricotta and witlof salad, kingfish fillets with green olives, vernaccia and chicory and everyone’s favourite… a slow roasted, pancetta wrapped lamb shoulder - all perfectly accompanied by delicious Sardinian wines.
What was extra special about this evening, was not just the sensational food and the unsurpassable views, but the incredibly warm atmosphere created by Giovanni, his wonderful wife Marilyn and their fabulous team. Their kind hospitality made everyone feel comfortable the moment they walked in the door.
Giovanni brought a personal touch to the evening sharing his love for Sardinia and local produce as he talked us through the menu. In true Italian style, lively tables a mix with friends old and new – shared stories, passed plates, laughter and cheer… it was very much an authentic, Italian affair!
